In a game that can be best described as surreal we saw 47 runs scored, 30 walks, 3 hit batsmen, 26 hits and a double play on offensive interference called. The game was delayed at the outset and we finished in the dark as the fifth inning came to a close. We saw Bryan Wilcenski go 3 for 4 with a walk and three triples, Tim Maloney went 3 for 3 with a walk and an inside-the-park home run and Shea Iveson was 3 for 3 with two walks, two singles and a double. Jacek Strain was 2 for 4 with a walk, a double and a triple, Andrew Sieczkowski was 2 for 4 with a walk, a single and a double and Michael Decker was 2 for 2 with two singles and two walks. Jack Callahan entered the game in the third and contributed two singles. Jeffrey Swift had a huge bases-clearing double in the first inning and Jason O'Brien picked up his first hit of the Districts. Andrew Macpherson and Evan Grimes both reached on a HBP and a walk. After the Vipers opened with a 5-0 lead we gave it back and came in trailing 10-5. We scored another four but fell further back at 12-9 and then scored five in the third to take a 14-12 lead. We then committed numerous errors in the bottom of the inning and came in trailing 22-14. We scored twice and held them in the fourth making it 22-16 entering the fifth inning. As dusk began to fall the Vipers put another 8 runs on the board and took a 24-22 lead. As Queensbury had the bases loaded with one run in and two outs Andrew Sieczkowski got the last hitter swinging as full darkness settled in on us. The team wished Jack a happy birthday and enjoyed their snacks and departed for home under the night sky. It was a game for the ages. |
