On an overcast Sunday makeup game against Rinaldi’s Davies Office Refurbishing team, DeYoe’s Advanced Therapy narrowly missed coming back to steal a win for a second straight night. The evening started off on a positive note. Gavin Heffernan walked in the first, followed by a double by Eric DeYoe. Both scored on a sharp single by Cooper Martell for an early 2-0 lead. Rinaldi’s squad came storming back though, supported by strong pitching by Nick Rinaldi after starting pitcher, Brendan Navarro went down to injury. Best of luck for a speedy recovery, Brendan! Rinaldi’s squad hit the ball well and piled on 12 unanswered runs, prepared to coast to an easy victory. That’s when DeYoe’s squad decided to show the true character of the team. With only two innings remaining and down 10 runs, Deyoe’s squad stormed back and nearly pulled off an upset for the ages. Offensively, Heffernan had another walk, DeYoe stroked a couple singles and Jonathan Scotto got an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Martell added a bloop double down the right field line, scoring two. Greg Wilson got an RBI on a fielder’s choice, Ryan Zigrosser hit a sharp single, as did Alex MacDonald and David Kalmer, scoring and RBI. Brenden Carroll had a single and a walk. Carroll was robbed of a hit by a great play by Rinaldi’s shortstop. Carroll returned the favor, earlier in the game making a great catch in deep center, preventing more damage from an imposing Rinaldi squad. Christian Pappas stroked a nice single and Shane Brownell had a walk to finish out the offense. On defense, DeYoe was led by Eric DeYoe, who pitched a six strikeout performance and made several clutch plays, including a dribbler to the mound to first, avoiding a run and a heads up play to the plate with the bases loaded, avoiding further damage. Greg Wilson came in to complete the game, pitching a scoreless fifth and giving his team a chance for the victory. Wilson recorded a strikeout and elicited inning ending pop out’s to Martell and DeYoe at short and second, respectively. Heffernan made a nice play on a high pop out in foul territory in the 4th, avoiding further damage. MacDonald and Pappas made great hustle plays getting to well placed balls in the outfield by the Rinaldi squad and getting the balls in quickly, preventing further damgage and helping their team stay close. With 3 outs remaining, DeYoe's team almost completed the improbable…coming from 10 down with 2 to go. Scoring 7 runs in the 5th, making the score 12-9, DeYoe’s squad had runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs and the tying run with David Kalmer at the plate. Kalmer had a magnificent at bat, fouling off pitch after pitch on an 0-2 count before ultimately working the count full. Kalmer hit a sharp ball to short, hustled down the line and was narrowly thrown out on a great defensive play by Rinaldi’s squad. To come back from 10 runs down with two innings to go and have the tying run at the plate in the 6th was a remarkable accomplishment and testament to the heart of the DeYoe team.
